EMV is on the Way

Parkside will be issuing new EMV chip cards to all debit card holders beginning on September 28, 2016. The card will have a different color and design, and there will be a small chip embedded in the left side.

Steps to Activate Your New Card!

  • Call 1.866.762.0558 from your primary phone to activate all new cards associated with your account and to select your new PIN (Personal Identification Number).
  • Activate each card separately using the primary card holder’s social security number (SSN) and primary phone as listed with Parkside Credit Union.
  • If your phone number on file with Parkside does not match the number used when calling, card activation will be delayed at least 24 hours.

Note the Following:

  • Your card number and expiration date may If they do, be sure to notify any company that automatically charges your debit card.
  • Starting September 1, you will receive 1 point for every $5 spent on debit card purchases run as credit. If you would like to view your points and your redemption options, simply create an account at www.scorecardrewards.com .

How to Use Your New Card

  • At point-of-purchase, you will insert your card into a slot located in the bottom of the card terminal and then sign for the transaction before removing your card.
  • Your new card will also have a magnetic stripe on the side, so it can still be used at merchants who have not purchased updated card terminals with EMV slots.
  • For “card-not-present” transactions (such as online purchases), nothing will change from the way you currently conduct transactions.

Tips for Preventing Debit Card Fraud

  • Download CardNav App—Parkside’s FREE debit card control app that lets you turn your debit card on and off from the convenience of your smartphone. Simply search for “CardNav” in your device’s app store.
  • Do not share your card’s PIN with anyone, and be sure not to write it on the card or leave it in your wallet.
  • Ensure online purchases are conducted on trusted, secure websites.
  • Check your Parkside account statements frequently and report any fraudulent transactions immediately.
  • Let Parkside’s Card Services Department know when you will be traveling out of state so they can place travel details on your card, ensuring your purchases are not blocked while traveling. They can be reached at 734.525.0700 or plasticcard@parksidecu.org.

Welcome, Village Community CU!

The Parkside Credit Union/Village Community Credit Union merger has been completed successfully. Access to all electronic services was restored. We thank you for your patience and for your membership!

Parkside Credit Union’s Staff, Management and Board of Directors are pleased to welcome the staff and membership of Village Community Credit Union, which will be merging into Parkside as of January 1, 2016. Upon completion of this merger Parkside will emerge with four full-service branches to serve members in Livonia, Westland and at two locations in Dearborn.

Please see below for answers to additional questions you may have regarding this merger. Please do not hesitate to contact Parkside at 734.525.0700 if you have any concerns.

When does the merger take place?

The effective date of the merger is January 1, 2016. Please note – online banking, bill pay, telephone banking and all other electronic services used to access account information will not be available beginning at 10 p.m. on December 31. Access to online banking and telephone banking will be restored in the early morning  hours of Saturday, January 2. Bill pay access will be restored on Monday, January 4. ATM, debit, and credit cards can be used during this time. CO-OP Family Service Centers will be available on December 31 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 2 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. ‘Offline’ limits will apply during this time, meaning transaction limits may be lower than you are accustomed to.

How are statements impacted?

Village Community Credit Union members who are enrolled in e-statements will be receiving their 12/31 statement via U.S. mail. This is a one-time mailed statement and a fee will not be assessed. Beginning with 1/31/16 statements, enrolled members will receive an e-statement notification and will be able to view the statement within the “My Documents” tab of Parkside CU’s online banking platform.  Please be advised that archived statements from Village Community will no long be available after 10 p.m. on December 31. You may wish to go in and print your archived statements before this time.

What does this merger mean for me?

Without having to do anything, you will automatically become a member of Parkside Credit Union. In addition to the products and services Village Community members currently enjoy, a merger with Parkside will provide access to a variety of new rewards checking accounts as well as additional loan products and rates. Parkside will also offer added convenience to Village Community members with two branch locations and 7 additional surcharge-free ATMs.

What will happen to the staff at Village Community Credit Union?

Each Village Community staff member has been offered a position with Parkside. As a combined organization, Parkside can offer our employees a secure future and greater opportunities for advancement.

Will the existing branch offices remain open?

Will my direct deposit and payroll deduction stay the same?

Yes. If you currently have direct deposit of your payroll check, payroll deduction or direct deposit of pension or social security to your account, it will automatically transfer to Parkside Credit Union without having to do anything. If you would like to set up a new automatic deposit or payment after the first of the year please be sure to use Parkside’s routing number: 272482456 and contact the credit union for your full checking account number.

Does Parkside Credit Union have online banking?

After the merger you will be able to access your accounts and perform transactions via Parkside’s Online Banking site; www.parksidecu.org. As of January 1, 2016 you will access these systems via Parkside’s website using your new account number.

Can I continue to use my Village Community Credit Union Debit card?

You may continue to use your Village Community Credit Union Debit Card. However, in the coming months you will be issued a Parkside Credit Union Debit Card including EMV chip technology.

Will I still be able to access telephone banking?

Yes, Parkside offers telephone banking. Beginning January 1, please call into Parkside’s Telephone Banking system, 866.554.1584. There is no access code required. Log in using your updated base account number.

Will I be able to view and print archived statements and check copies?

Going forward you will be able to view and print your archived Parkside statements and check copies through the online banking platform. Please note – archived Village Community statements and check copies from checks deposited before January 1 will not come over in the merger. You may wish to print and/or save these documents for your records prior to the merger.

Will loan and savings rates change?

The rates in effect for Parkside on the date of the merger will be the rates for products and services offered to you. In most cases, Parkside’s rates are similar to Village Community’s.

What about fees?

Bill Pay Upgrade Coming Soon

Prepare for your EasyPay Bill Pay upgrade on December 14

Parkside Credit Union is upgrading from the current Bill Pay system to iPay’s EasyPay system on December 14, 2015. Paying bills will be easier and more convenient than ever, giving you more freedom to enjoy life.

This upgrade should not disrupt your service. In fact, we’re making the entire upgrade as simple and seamless as possible for you.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • You will still access Bill Pay via the “Pay and Transfer” tab within Online Banking.
  • You will be prompted to answer a challenge phrase the first time you log in to your upgraded account.
  • You can view previous history via the “View History” link below the Payee list, then select the “History Prior To 12/14/2015” link at the top of the payee information. A PDF listing of previous history will appear.
  • All of your payees and any recurring scheduled payments will automatically carry over to the new system.
  • December 6 is the last day to access the current Bill Pay platform.
  • The system will experience down time (from December 8 – 13) while the conversion is being processed.
  • The new EasyPay Bill Pay platform does offer e-Bill technology, however current e-bills that have been set up by members within the current Bill Pay system will not be converted into the new platform. You need to immediately print or record any e-bill information that is important to you. You will have the option to re-setup e-bills on the new platform.
  • The new iPay product runs on a “Good Funds” model, meaning for those members who do not have Courtesy Pay, bills will not be paid if funds are not available in the member’s account.
  • Please view a short demo to see the enhanced simplicity and convenience of the upgraded EasyPay Bill Pay platform.
  • For information about adding payees and scheduling payments, go to the “Help” tab within the new EasyPay platform (accessed via online banking).

Card Fraud is on the Rise

In 2014, over 31 million U.S. consumers had their credit cards breached*. Credit and debit card fraud is unfortunately an ongoing issue within the financial services industry. In the past year, Parkside, along with other financial institutions, has experienced a significant increase in the number of reported credit card and debit card fraud cases.

As a cooperative, losing money as a result of fraudulent transactions directly impacts the credit union’s costs of doing business, which further impacts our members in terms of the fee schedule, loan and savings rates. Consequently, we have implemented new procedures to protect our members’ funds. When a Parkside member is a victim of fraud, we may ask that member to take steps to help recover the funds. We understand that any change to longstanding procedure may initially cause some concern; our goal is not to transfer accountability to our members, but to reduce losses to the credit union, ensuring the continued prosperity of the credit union and its member-owners.

In addition to changing our procedure for recovering money lost to fraudulent transactions, we are in the process of planning the rollout of EMV chip cards to members in early 2016. EMV chip cards contain embedded chips that produce unique transaction codes with every purchase, making it difficult to counterfeit cards and steal data.

As an added level of security, Parkside also offers CardNav, an app that helps users manage “how, when and where” their debit cards are used, allowing users to easily “turn on” and “turn off” their cards. This app can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Rest assured that we are proactively working to combat credit and debit card fraud to the best of our ability. Please do not hesitate to contact Parkside with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thanks so much for your support and your membership!

Parkside Credit Union is Awarded 5 Stars

Bauer logo

Parkside Credit Union has been awarded 5 stars in Bankrate.com’s Safe & Sound® Ratings service for the quarter ended September 30, 2014. Parkside is one of just five Michigan Credit Unions to make the list. A 5-star rating is the highest award rating and is defined as a “Superior” ranking of relative financial strength and stability. For more than 17 years, Bankrate.com’s Safe & Sound® service has given consumers information on the relative financial strength and stability of U.S. commercial banks, savings institutions and credit unions.

Parkside has also been awarded 5 stars by BauerFinancial. 5-Stars is BauerFinancial’s highest rating. A 5-Star “Superior” rating indicates, among other things, that an institution has at least twice the capital that regulators require, is profitable (or operating with a very small loss) and has kept its delinquent loans in check.

“We’re very proud of being recognized with the select group of financial institutions by Bankrate.com and BauerFinancial,” said Martin Carter, CEO of Parkside Credit Union. He continued, “Parkside would not have achieved these ratings without the hard work and dedication of our employees, who are diligent in their efforts to keep our expenses under control while continuing to provide world-class service to our members.”

Keep Gift Cards Safe this Holiday Season

Everyone loves tangible holiday gifts like jewelry or shoes, but the most popular gifts are gift cards. In fact, for the past eight years, gift cards have been the most requested item on holiday wish lists.

Unfortunately gift cards are one of the easiest gifts for fraudsters to get their hands on.

Thieves can purchase a physical or digital gift card using a stolen credit card or simply steal the gift card number and PIN and leave the physical gift card at the store. These thieves will typically use the gift card’s balance themselves then resell the card on the secondary market. Alternatively, the thieves may go into the store themselves and purchase physical goods that they can then resell.

So, if you are planning on purchasing gift cards for loved ones this holiday season, keep a few things in mind. If you want to purchase a gift card, for instance at Best Buy, consider purchasing it from a local Best Buy store and not from a gift card resale market. Also be sure to watch for Tampering. If the card isn’t in a plastic casing, make sure the PIN hasn’t been scratched off.

For the recipient there are also a few tips. First, if available, register the gift card with the retailer. Starbucks, for instance, gives the option to register the gift card to protect the balance in the case it is ever lost or stolen.  Next, treat gift cards like cash.  Having a gift card is a lot like having cash sitting around – you want to consider using it before something happens to it.

Keep these helpful tips handy and you can keep your gift cards safe this holiday season!

This Post was developed as a summary overview of Susan Johnson’s US News Article, How to Avoid Gift Card Fraud this Holiday Season. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2014/11/19/how-to-avoid-gift-card-fraud-this-holiday-season/

Parkside’s 60th Anniversary Celebration

Parkside Credit Union is proud to be celebrating its 60th anniversary this year!

Parkside was founded on July 27, 1953 by 15 people under the name Parkside Livonia Credit Union. It was originally established to serve the employees of the Livonia Ford Transmission. The first branch was actually located on Amrhein Rd. in Livonia!

After merging with the Wayne Auto Assembly Federal Credit Union in 1980 and a few relocations, Parkside finally opened its doors to the community in June 2006. Now any person who lives, works, worships or goes to school within a 25 mile radius is able to enjoy the services offered by Parkside Credit Union.

In conjunction with the 60th anniversary, Parkside is holding two member appreciation days this month. Don’t Tax My Credit Union

“Don’t Tax My Credit Union” is a national campaign working to make sure Congress doesn’t take away the credit union tax exemption status. If that exemption is removed, credit unions all over the country, including Parkside, will begin to be largely taxed. For every $1 in new taxes on credit unions, the government would take out $10 in benefits to credit union members. This tax would affect you, our member, the most. There isn’t any voting or bills being introduced yet, but we all need to work together to prevent the idea even coming on the table. We strongly encourage you to stand up and fight.

You can write your local legislators by:

  1. 1. Go to www.donttaxmycreditunion.org/take-action/
  2. 2. Click on “New? Register here” on the right side of the screen
  3. 3. Fill in your information and all required lines
  4. 4. Type in “Parkside” when asked for your credit union name
  5. 5. Select to send either an email or a letter to your local representatives
  6. 6. Use the subject line “Don’t Tax My Credit Union”
  7. 7. Submit

We thank you for your involvement and support.

Through The Eyes of a Child

Parkside Credit Union is proud to present Through the Eyes of a Child, a very special local school program with world-renowned photographer Monte Nagler.

Parkside Credit Union has teamed up with Westland Shopping Center and world- renowned photographer Monte Nagler to bring a very special learning experience to Livonia and Westland 3rd graders. Through this program both kids and adults alike will see that photos will truly speak a thousand words.

On March 29th and 30th 2012, Monte Nagler visited Grant and Hayes Elementary Schools in Livonia and Thomas Edison Elementary School in Westland. His purpose was to not only teach young children the art of photography, but to also inspire them.

Parkside Credit Union gave each student a disposable camera to take their own photos while keeping in mind everything that Mr. Nagler taught them. Then in two weeks, they will turn in their camera. Mr. Nagler will develop their film, and choose one photo that he thinks is the best from each child’s camera roll. Each of Monte’s chosen photos will be framed and on display at Westland Shopping Center in the near future on a yet to be determined date. Check back to our website for the official date and time.

Parkside Credit Union will also use these photos in a calendar for 2013, which will be free to all PCU members.

This event has received some publicity. Read the write up from the Detroit News here: Detroit News

And check out Grant Elementary Schools slideshow of Monte teaching the children here: Livonia Public Schools

Everyone is welcome to the ribbon cutting ceremony at Westland Shopping Center on a To Be Determined date in the near future. The photos will be on display for 2-4 weeks.

Difference Between Credit Unions and Banks

Credit Unions Vs. Banks:  What is the Big Difference?

Why choose a credit union over a bank?  What are the advantages?  These are commonly asked questions.  Many people do not understand the difference between the two establishments. Therefore, they do not know which will best suit their needs. Both banks and credit unions are financial institutions, but that is about all they have in common.

First let’s explore banks. Banks do have some positive attributes. They are regulated by the government.  Depending on their charter, they are either regulated by the federal or state government much like credit unions.  Banks are also FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) insured. Knowing that these regulations and insurance are in place makes most people feel safer having their money at these institutions.

However, banks are also “for profit” organizations. Their main objective is high profits. As a customer of a bank, you are a means to an end. This does not mean that you will not get good customer service and be treated well. What it does mean is your business is supporting the overall financial well being of the stockholders or “owners” of the bank.  And banks have been so successful at making a profit that they have set record profit levels in the past decade. Lower profits for a bank means higher fees, higher loan rates or whatever it takes to get their profit margin back up.

Credit Unions, on the other hand, are a “not for profit” organization.  Their main objective is servicing their members with quality member service, lower fees and loan rates. They too are regulated by the federal or state government, also determined by their charter.  They too are insured, only they are supported by the NCUSIF (National Credit Union Share Insurance) which many feel to be a stronger fund than the FDIC.

Credit unions are owned by their membership.  In order to become a member, you must be eligible and this varies by individual credit union. Once you have an account at a credit union, you are a member and an owner.  You can run for the Board of Directors, have a voice in how that credit union operates. Because of this, credit unions work for the best interest of their members.  While it is true that credit unions can and do make a profit, these profits are turned into lower loan rates, lower fees, all of which benefit the members.

In conclusion, when looking at which financial institution you want to use, you must decide how you want to be viewed. If you want to be viewed as more than a dollar sign, a credit union is a great way to go. Because you are an owner, your voice will be heard.  You will be the most important thing, not high profits.

Schoolcraft Contest Winner

Parkside Credit Union was recently at Schoolcraft College’s School Daze event in which attendees could enter to win a $100 Visa Gift Card. We would like to congratulate Chris Vezima. He was randomly chosen to win. When asked what he will do with the money, he said that he plans to donate his winnings to a charity for wounded warriors. What a guy!

Thanks to Chris and all the others who entered our drawing. And congratulations again to Chris!

What Does Your Credit Score Mean?

Most financial institutions, including Parkside Credit Union, use the credit score of the loan applicant as part of the decision when both approving and pricing credit.  The credit score most used is the FICO score.  What goes into the credit score?  Data from your credit report is divided into five major categories.  The scoring factors on each category varies, some weighing more than others.

35 percent = Payment History:  Your account payment history of current vs. missed or late payments.  Also in this category are any public records.

30 percent = Amount Owed:  This compares the amount owed to the amount of credit available. The closer ones balance is to their revolving line of credit limit(s), the greater the risk is to the lender.

15percent = Length of Credit History:  It looks at how long you have had credit and the average age of credit and account activity.

10 percent = New Credit:  It reviews newly opened accounts as well as recent inquires.

10 percent = Types of Credit Used:  The mixture of credit, such as Mortgage, installment, and revolving.

Although you can’t raise your score overnight, there are things you can do to help to increase it fairly quickly. Things like, paying down your revolving lines, and making timely payments will help to increase your score the quickest.
